What Is The Differences Between Self-baking Electrode, Carbon Electrode and Graphite Electrode?

The function of electrode is electric conduction and convert the electric energy to the heat energy. According to the applications and production processes, electrode can be divided into three kinds: carbon electrode, Graphite Electrode and self-baking electrode. In the submerged arc furnace, the factory mainly use self-baking electrode. But when producing low carbon content ferroalloy products, such as industrial silicon, the Graphite Electrode is the best option. Here is the question, what is the differences between self-baking electrode, carbon electrode and Graphite Electrode?

First of all, we have to be able to distinguish the three kinds of electrodes.

1. Carbon electrode is made by low ash anthracite, metallurgical coke and pet coke in a proper ratio. During the blending process, adding pitch and tar as the adhesives. Then stirring in the a proper temperature. Next is the forming process and then baking in the calcinator is the last process.

2. Graphite Electrode is made of petroleum coke and pitch coke. It will be made into carbon electrode firstly, then putting in the Graphitized resistance furnace at a 2000-2500℃. That, the semi-product is finished.

3. Self-baking electrode is called electrode paste or soderberg electrode paste. It is made by anthracite, coke, pitch and oil tar under a certain temperature. Then the electrode paste is filled into the electrode shell of arc furnace, relying on the joule heat and inside furnace heat, the sintering and coking will be done by itself. This kind of electrode is able to be used continuously, the using and sintering molding are on the same time, and can be fired into a large diameter.

The self-baking electrode has a simple manufacturing process and low cost, and is widely used in the production of ferroalloys. Usually used to produce ferrosilicon, silicon chrome alloy, silicon manganese alloy, high carbon ferromanganese, medium and low carbon ferromanganese, high carbon ferrochrome, medium and low carbon ferrochrome, silicon calcium alloy, tungsten iron and so on. The self-baking electrode tends to increase the carbon of the alloy, and the electrode shell iron is also easy to bring the alloy into the iron. Therefore, producing low carbon content ferroalloy and pure metal, such as   micro-carbon ferrochrome, industrial silicon, silicon-aluminum alloy, metal manganese, etc, need to use carbon electrode and Graphite Electrode.
